Last term, our wonderful International Programme Manager Pauline headed out for an action-packed day at the iconic Driving Creek in the Coromandel.
It was an incredible opportunity for our students to step away from the classroom, immerse themselves in New Zealand’s native bush, and try out some truly unique Kiwi experiences.
Here are the highlights from our fantastic day out!
Getting Hands-On with Clay: Pottery Classes
Driving Creek was originally established by renowned potter Barry Brickell, so it was only fitting that our day started with a hands-on pottery workshop.
Under the guidance of talented local artists, our students rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty on the potter’s wheel. From rustic cups to creative sculptures, everyone had a blast shaping their own unique clay creations. It was a calm, focused, and wonderfully tactile way to kick off the morning—and a great chance for students to take home a hand-crafted souvenir from their time in New Zealand!
Riding the Famous Driving Creek Railway
Next up was one of the Coromandel’s most famous attractions: the Driving Creek Railway.
We boarded the narrow-gauge mountain train and began a scenic, winding journey up through re-established native kauri forest. The train ride is a marvel of engineering, weaving over high wooden viaducts, through tunnels, and up steep spirals. Along the way, our students learned about the history of the land and the incredible conservation efforts that restored the surrounding bush.
The trip culminated at the Eyefull Tower, where we were treated to breathtaking, panoramic views over the Coromandel Hauraki Gulf.
Soaring Through the Canopy: Ziplining Action
For the grand finale, it was time to dial up the adrenaline with the Coromandel Zipline Tour.
After suiting up in harnesses and safety gear, our students soared high above the forest canopy on a series of thrilling ziplines. Flying past ancient native trees and over deep fern gorges was an absolute highlight, providing an incredible bird’s-eye view of the bush. The cheers and laughter echoed through the valley as even the most cautious students conquered their fears and zipped through the trees!
Memories That Will Last a Lifetime
Days like this are what study abroad experiences are all about—discovering new places, building confidence, trying new activities, and bonding with friends.
Here is Lilli and Nele with their final product:

A massive thank you to Pauline for organising such a smooth, fun-filled trip, and to the brilliant team at Driving Creek for hosting us. Our international students returned home tired, thrilled, and with plenty of stories (and pottery!) to share.
